What is artificial respiration?

Artificial respiration is a technique that is used to help a person or animal breathe when they are not breathing on their own.

When to use

Artificial respiration should be used if your dog is not breathing.

Opening the airway

To open your dog's airway, tilt their head back and lift their chin.

Giving rescue breaths

To give rescue breaths, pinch your dog's nose closed and cover their mouth with yours. Blow into their mouth until their chest rises.

Continue artificial respiration

Continue artificial respiration until your dog starts breathing on their own.

When to stop

You can stop artificial respiration if your dog starts breathing on their own.

Get help

After you have performed artificial respiration, it is important to get your dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
